STEM Enrichment

Since 2013, the Worcester County Department of Economic Development has provided a STEM summer enrichment continuum for students ages 12-24.  Our STEM Summer Programs connect Worcester County STEM businesses with the future workforce and provide opportunities for classroom studies to be applied to real life tasks.

The continuum consists of three components:

  • Reach for the Stars STEM Camp (2017/2018 grades 6-8)
  • Worcester STEM Leadership Cohort (2017/2018 grades 9-11)
  • STEP UP STEM Internship Program (2017/2018 grade 12, college, and graduate students)

Application Process: Applications for all three components of the program can be completed online (links below) from January 23 through March 31.  Supporting documents are requested, including transcripts, an online essay, and online recommendations.  Transcripts should be mailed to:   Worcester County Economic Development, STEM Summer Programs, 100 Pearl Street Ste B, Snow Hill, MD 21863. Interviews for internship applicants will be scheduled on a rolling basis as applications are received, so early application is encouraged.  Interviews for STEM Leadership Cohort applicants will be scheduled for April. Applicants will be notified of status by May 1, 2018.

Reach for the Stars STEM Camp

Mondays-Thursdays, 9 am-4 pm, July 16-26

Eligibility: Worcester County resident students currently in grades 6-8

Campers will participate in hands-on activities and engineering challenges with dynamic instructors to learn about computer programming, robotics, and aerospace engineering.  This camp is held at the Red Doors Community Center on 3rd Street in Ocean City, includes instruction with the NASA House Robotics Team Titanium Wrecks, and will take field trips around Worcester County and to NASA Wallops Flight Facility.  Free van transportation is provided from central pickup points in Pocomoke, Snow Hill, and Berlin.  There is no cost for camp.

*Priority admission is offered to students who are historically underrepresented in STEM careers and first-time camp applicants.  The 2018 camp will include several of the same activities as previous camps.

Worcester STEM Leadership Cohort

July 10, 12, 19, 26 from  9 am-3 pm

Eligibility:  Worcester County resident students currently in grades 9-11

The STEM Leadership Cohort will participate in professional development sessions on a variety of career readiness topics, including resume writing, interview skills, workplace communication, conflict resolution, leadership, and entrepreneurship.  Students will be receive mentorship from several of our STEM workforce partners, and participate in a workshop at NASA Wallops Flight Facility.  Each participant will be paid a stipend of $200.  Students may need to arrange for their own transportation on each of the four dates:  one in Ocean City, one day in Princess Anne, one day in Pocomoke, one day in Wallops Island.

STEP UP STEM Internship Program

Schedules vary depending on employers.  100 total hours between June 1 and July 26.

Eligibility: Worcester County residents currently in grade 12 and college and graduate students who maintain residency in Worcester County (including those who reside out-of-county or out-of-state at college during the academic year)

The STEP UP Internship Program is designed to provide high school and college students with the opportunity to gain hands-on work experience in a career field related to STEM.  2018 STEP UP internships include placements in local medical settings, IT companies, engineering firms, environmental science agencies, and digital media production companies.  STEP UP STEM Interns participate in paid professional development sessions throughout the internship experience teaching valuable career readiness skills.

Each intern will be paid for 100 total hours at $11/hour.

Full time internships in partnership with STEP UP are available at NASA Wallops Flight Facility and Orbital ATK, but additional applications must also be completed.  NASA interns must apply by March 1 using the NASA OSSI portal at http://intern.nasa.gov.  Applicants for Orbital ATK internships need to be engineering students who have completed at least two years of college.  Applications can be completed at https://jobs.orbitalatk.com/.  Please email fawnmete@gmail.com to express interest.
